Fall in Love with Paprika Southern Magazine

Hey y’all! We’re excited to share a little bit about Paprika Southern today here on Jules Loves. Thanks to Jules for inviting us!

Paprika Southern is the quarterly publication for art and style in the South. We (Bevin Valentine Jalbert and Siobhan Egan) started Paprika Southern in 2013 as a monthly online magazine. After publishing 24 (!) online issues over the course of 2 years, in 2015 we successfully funded a Kickstarter campaign that allowed us to transition to print.

Now that we’re in print, we publish 4 seasonally-focused issues per year. We love to share the stories of entrepreneurs, makers and artists, particularly women, in the South. We also do lifestyle features that cover fashion, home, hostessing, food, weddings, beauty and more!

We first met Jules right around the end of our online run, when she did the hair and makeup for the fashion shoot in our final online issue. We then started collaborating regularly on a monthly beauty blog hosted on Paprika Southern, as well as fashion shoots and beauty editorials.

At Paprika Southern we are committed to providing stories that empower readers, and publishing positive images of women. We did an interview for our Winter 2015 issue with Jules where, when talking about the Jules – More Than Makeup line she said “My message is way too long for the back of the box.”

In thinking about this sentence, it makes us think of Paprika Southern in a different way. Our story unfolds and evolves with each new issue we publish. Because we (and by “we” I mean we as Paprika Southern, but also “we” as anyone who is a business-owner) need a tagline for branding and social media purposes– “Paprika Southern is the quarterly publication for art and style in the South,” “We tell stories about the South.” But in reality the story is more nuanced than a sound bite.
